About the Salmon Group

MISSION

The Mattole Salmon Group works toward the recovery of the native salmon populations and human communities of the Mattole River Watershed through: habitat restoration and watershed monitoring according to the latest available scientific research, community outreach and education to increase local knowledge of our unique watershed, and community building by increasing sustainable, restoration-based employment opportunities to rural residents.

The Mattole Salmon Group (MSG), a community based non-profit organization, has been
working in the Mattole River watershed for twenty-nine years to restore salmon and steelhead
populations to robust, self-perpetuating populations. The MSG was the first watershed-wide,
entirely citizen-run effort in the Pacific Northwest to begin restoring native salmon runs and the
river upon which they depend. Since 1980, the organization has worked in the Mattole River to
assess salmonid population abundance; identify the factors that directly limit salmon survival;
seek strategies, tools, and techniques to address those limiting factors; and implement direct
restoration and enhancement actions to remediate those limiting factors.
